DOG CARE
VACCINATIONS
Puppies should be vaccinated at the following ages:
6 - 8 weeks - "C3" - canine distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus.
12 - 16 weeks - "C5" - canine distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza virus, and bordetella.
Then once a year for life have your dogs vaccinated with "C5".
At each vaccination, we will give your dog a complete physical examination.
WORMING
Worm puppies every 2 weeks until 12 weeks old with a complete wormer such as
Drontal, Popantel or Canex, then every 3 months thereafter.
PREVENTING HEARTWORM
All dogs should be on heartworm prevention treatment for life,
starting with your puppy at 9 weeks of age.
Preventatives include daily or monthly preparations.
If your dog is not on any heartworm prevention treatment, please check with
us as your dog may need testing beforehand. Dogs 12 months or older can receive a yearly injection.
DESEXING
If you do not intend breeding with your dog he or she should be desexed at 6 - 8 months of age.
Desexing reduces problems such as of straying and aggression.
Evidence has shown that desexing your dog also reduces the risks of it contracting
mammary, prostatic, testicular, perianal and ovarian cancers as well as uterine
and prostate infections, and perineal hernias.
BATHING & GROOMING
Dogs need washing every 1 - 2 weeks, especially in the summer months.
Products such as 'Dermcare-Vet' can alleviate senstive skin.
All dogs need to have their teeth kept clean,
either by using pet toothpaste and brushing,
or by regular chewing with brisket bones, rusks or
fresh raw chicken wings.
FLEAS
There are many flea products available on the market.
to deal with a flea’s life-cycle by preventing the flea eggs from hatching.
Some effective flea protection products are Frontline or Advantage.
TICKS
Ticks can cause paralysis if they attach themselves to your pets.
Tick paralysis symptoms can include strange breathing, vomiting,
and progressive weakness and paralysis of the hind
limbs, then the front limbs, and then collapse and death within 4 - 7 days of
the attachment.
If you find a small tick, and the pet is NOT
showing symptoms of paralysis, you can simply pull
it out with tweezers.
Do not apply anything such as methylated spirits or turpentine.
If your pet dog is showing symptoms, DO NOT remove the tick and
bring your pet to us immediately for antiserum treatment before tick removal.
To prevent tick infestation check your pet daily tick with your fingertips
over his/her entire body, especially the head, neck, shoulders,
front legs and chest.
Other preventatives include Tick Collars, Frontline,
and Proban tablets or drops.
REGISTRATION
It is now law to have your dog microchipped.
This is injected just like a vaccination.
